When you have a single missing tooth, or a tooth that is irreparably compromised the best permanent replacement is a dental implant in conjunction with a porcelain (ceramic) crown. This solution both looks and functions just like a natural tooth. Replacing a missing or damaged tooth is important to your long-term dental health as a result of changes in the bite that may otherwise occur to compensate for the lost tooth. Benefits of a single tooth implant: A single tooth implant is a free-standing unit and does not involve treatment to the adjacent teeth. With a dental implant the surrounding teeth can remain untouched if they are healthy, and their strength and integrity may be maintained. The implant can stabilize the bite and help prevent problems with the adjacent teeth or jaw. |

Course of treatment
This procedure normally includes four visits to our clinic. You should expect to be able to work the day after having the implant installed. The course of treatment described here is one of several options available. Dr Fibishenko will advise you on the best solution for you, given your specific condition and individual needs.
| | Visit 1: Examination & X-Rays Dr Fibishenko performs an examination and takes one or more x-rays. He will then determine your suitability for an implant crown and explore all other treatment alternatives or simultaneous treatment that may improve appearance, function, or overall dental health. Where a tooth requires removal, it is often preferable to place the implant fixture at the same time as the extraction to minimize gum recession. In some cases preliminary steps may be required before implant placement to ensure an optimal result. Appointment Duration: 15-30 minutes |
 | | Visit 2: Installing the Dental Implant The area is made numb and the dental implant fixture is placed in the jaw below the level of the gum. Dr Fibishenko often performs this procedure with keyhole surgery to minimize discomfort. A healing screw is then inserted to cover the implant and the implant is allowed 3 months to bond with the bone. Where required, some form of a temporary tooth is provided, supported by the adjacent teeth. In some cases it is possible to place an immediate temporary crown attached to the implant at the same time surgical visit. Appointment Duration: 30-60 minutes
|
| | Visit 3: Impressions and Final Aesthetics Once it is confirmed that the implant successfully bonded with the bone, the temporary tooth and/or the healing screw is removed and an impression is taken to make the final crown that fits over the implant. At this stage Dr Fibishenko and his ceramics technician confirm the aesthetic needs to ensure that shape and color of your new tooth appears natural and meets your expectations. In some cases an additional ‘try-in’ appointment may be to fine-tune the final aesthetics. Appointment Duration: 30 minutes
|
| | Visit 4: Smile Solution The final step is to permanently insert the new implant crown. As function is restored, you can expect your new tooth to look and feel like a natural tooth. Caring for the implant crown involves the same daily oral hygiene process as for natural teeth, including regular brushing and flossing. Appointment Duration: 30 minutes |
Alternatives to an All-Ceramic Crown on Implant Tooth-supported fixed bridge Tooth-supported fixed bridge A traditional bridge involves grinding down adjacent teeth to support the bridge. It is a stable solution with good esthetics and function that is fairly easy to install. However, this alternative has two main disadvantages: continuous bone resorbtion in the edentulous area, and sacrificing healthy teeth on behalf of the bridge.
| | Removable partial denture This is not a permanent alternative to a lost tooth. It is unstable and loosely attached, which affects both function and comfort. A removable partial denture is made of plastic - a material that can't create the same esthetic result as a ceramic crown. The benefits are few but do exist: adjacent teeth aren't affected. It is easily and quickly installed and relatively cheap.
| | Resin-bonded bridge This alternative has some clear advantages: it is quickly installed, functions well and, since it is made of ceramic, it gives a high esthetic result. Moreover, natural healthy teeth aren't affected. But it is not very permanent. The resin-bonded bridge will eventually come off - probably after just a couple of years - and will then have to be reinstalled. | |
